TRICARE Prime Changes in 2026 – What Military Families Need to Know

Starting in 2026, TRICARE Prime will introduce a new pilot program in Atlanta and Tampa, offering military families expanded access, lower costs, and enhanced benefits.

Big changes are coming to TRICARE Prime starting in 2026, and if you or your family members are covered, you’ll want to know how this affects you.

What’s Changing?

Beginning January 1, 2026, the Defense Health Agency (DHA) will launch a 3-year pilot program in Atlanta, GA and Tampa, FL. This program introduces a new TRICARE Prime option, giving military families in these areas an alternative to the traditional TRICARE Prime network.

The new option will be managed by CareSource Military & Veterans (CSMV) and is designed to expand access, improve convenience, and reduce costs for beneficiaries.

Key Benefits of the New TRICARE Prime Option

  • No enrollment fees for the first year (for retirees and their families).
  • No referrals required to see in-network specialists.
  • Access to virtual health services and a 24/7 nurse advice line.
  • A dedicated primary care manager and care coordination.
  • TRICARE pharmacy benefits remain the same.
  • Emergency care still available at military hospitals and clinics.

Who’s Eligible?

  • Active-duty family members
  • Retirees and their families not eligible for Medicare
  • Transitional survivors
  • National Guard/Reserve family members when activated

🚫 Not eligible: Active-duty service members themselves and Medicare-eligible retirees (those with TRICARE For Life).

When to Enroll

  • Enrollment opens during TRICARE Open Season (November–December 2025).
  • Coverage starts January 1, 2026.

Why It Matters

This change gives families in Atlanta and Tampa more flexibility and lower costs, at least in the first year. The program will run as a test through 2028, after which DHA will decide if it should expand nationwide.

Bottom line: If you live in Atlanta or Tampa, you’ll soon have a new TRICARE Prime choice with fewer restrictions and more benefits. For everyone else, TRICARE Prime continues as usual.
